My proposal to make backslashreplace a default error handler 
for interactive session was rejected by Guido [1].

Does something like
  PYTHONIOENCODING=ascii:backslashreplace
work for you? With PYTHONIOENCODING, you can effectively make
backslashreplace a default error handler for your environment.
