There have been comments on the PR, but I'd like to focus the higher level issue back here. Specifically, see my comment https://github.com/python/cpython/pull/6768#discussion_r187813919 To summarize: I still think string inspections are the best we can do. I'm going to try to organize a meeting with Guido, Ivan, and Łukasz at the sprints on Monday.
