Hmm.  Looks like the answer to my question came before, via "Custom collection can has non-standard behavior with negative indices."  Really?  We're worried about a custom collection that assigns some crazy-ass meaning to a negative index applied to an empty sequence?  Like what?  I don't really care about supporting insane sequences ;-)
