The examples on 
http://python.sourceforge.net/maint-docs/lib/node389.html
(email module examples) use % codes for string interpolation.

The \% LaTeX escapes appear in the HTML version at 
least. The environment used for code examples appears 
not to need the % characters to be escaped.
