I don't understand why this issue was closed. Apparently it was closed because it is an old issue without checking if the issue is still relevant???

To be honest the way setup.py looks for libraries could use some attention, the current methods is a bit too magical to my taste. It is also too easy to accidentally depend on libraries you don't want to rely on (I have to create CPython builds for internal redistribution on a separate VM to avoid relying on HomeBrew).

P.S. Sorry about the late reaction, the bug tracker mails about this came in just before I went on a trip. I'm finally catching up with older mail.
