Just to defend gcc. :)  I still cannot reproduce Steven's problem
even with the C example and -m32.

Steven's gcc [GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-52)] is very old
and probably has quite a lot of distro patches.

I'd try a modern vanilla version.
