Balls-in-boxes _is_ one of the most basic of the canonical combinatorial problems.  You can verify this by opening any text on combinatorics or combinatorial probability.

"An extensive combinatorics package would be a different project. (And I have done a bit of work in this direction.)"

It sounds as though your project is in its infancy, but I'd like to see what you've got if you are willing to share.
