So I have solved my own issue, but the solution raises another question. Let me explain...

On a whim I copied the build/lib.linux-i686-2.7 directory into the /opt/Python-2.7/lib/python2.7 directory as lib-dynload. This worked and python installed correctly. In a quick test it looks like everything is fine. 

But now my question is, why didn't that directory get copied during the build?
