Here is why repr() is relevant - though the error message
was certainly weird.  With the latest CVS version:

  >>> xrange(maxint-1, maxint, 2)
  xrange(2147483646, -2147483648, 2)

Which is why I suggested to return last+step/abs(step)
as the 2nd argument.
