Okay, but to be up-front about this, I don't see any place in the stdlib for any more "helpers" that could more easily be maintained on pypi and wouldn't incur further support burden for anyone looking after this part of the standard library.

The only "helper" in the section you refer to is https://docs.python.org/3/library/unittest.mock.html#mock-open which I'd consider vestigal and a bit of a maintenance magnet.
