10**3 doesn't show off this hack as much as other numbers would; the hack only operates from 257 to the max in that will fit in a single long "digit" (32767 on 32-bit, 2**30 on 64-bit).

Anyway, freelist for one-digit longs seems nearly as good, and it's a lot more general-purpose, so I'm much more interested in that.
