Barry: if you could summarize how and why doko introduced dist-packages in Debian, or let me copy parts of email we exchanged a couple years ago, I think it could help.  Nick seems inclined to standardize doko’s solution, but IIRC it was an imperfect but working compromise, so we might want to rethink it.
