Have looked at this again and think I don't care what happens to it.  The gain is minimal but it doesn't take much extra core.  Like Fred, I'm not sure having another code path to test and maintain just to save 5 bytes.

Unassigning.  If anyone except the OP feels strongly either way, either close it or apply it.
