It's definitely App Engine Hackathon day, I just logged the exact same issue: http://bugs.python.org/setuptools/issue38 after Mike Orr noticed it. Of course now I remember that thread.. Take your pick of patches, PJE I explain in #38 why "moving the error one line down -- raise an ImportError instead of the NameError" is actually important

Per this thread, the placeholder .py file created by setuptools can cause problems when it deletes __loader__: http://markmail.org/message/qy2d6awkzcrr5t5s
