I've run with this for a couple of days and have not been
able to break it.   My benchmarks run slightly faster except
for PyBench which is 0.1% slower.  Regression tests pass
without exception.

The code itself looks fine and the approach makes sense.  It
does introduce some extra complexity and code duplication,
but the patch is still unified and comprehensible.
