Just to clarify, the current status is that the revision that Koobs identified is still in place, meaning that the AST files are regenerated into the build tree, not the source tree.

I don’t think there is much else to do for this bug, unless Koobs can provide more info why the Free BSD build could not find Python/Python-ast.c, or Roumen can get back with more info. Closing for the moment, but I am happy to help if I can resolve any problems that remain.
